Malaika by André Morais in Le Club de Médiapart
"the opportunity to discover a film of dizzying evocative power, blending an artistic and photographic exploration of the discrimination faced by people with albinism with the form of a timeless tale open to multiple interpretations, unfolding in the interstices of history. [...] Under André Morais’s direction, which gives generous space to sensory expression and a hypersensitive perception of the surrounding world, Malaika emerges as a fantastical tale of singular evocative strength, skillfully weaving local mythologies with rare poetic subtlety."

"A village where two communities that don't really get along coexist finds its future threatened by recurring illnesses. This is the starting point for an alliance between two women determined to shed light on these strange events. DreamAgo and the Valais Film Commission are delighted to offer writer-director Anne Zinn-Justin a script doctoring session with Sir Christopher Hampton for her project NAJMA ET SALOME, a story that follows the vein of a modern Western deeply rooted in reality and resonates universally!"

LES CAHIERS DU CINEMA talks about THE FLAME OF A CANDLE by André Gil Mata
THE FLAME OF A CANDLE, whose programmatic title suggests a constrained economy, the surfacing of the past, and Caravaggesque chiaroscuro, is a cinematic undertaking whose narrative and formal demands, in its slow and silent exploration of the infra-ordinary in 16mm, are nourished by the apparent austerity of its subject."

EL DIARIO DE SEVILLA talks about THE FLAME OF A CANDLE by André Gil Mata
"André Gil Mata seems to be a filmmaker from another era; his works are linked to the aspirations and grandeur of cinema. […] Thus, in his film, movement and time meet and separate, come together and move apart, as in this circular tracking shot around a table where he manages to travel into the past of family history while moving slowly across the room, or in this final, moving sequence shot; one of the unforgettable moments of this festival."

LES CAHIERS DU CINEMA about THE FLAME OF A CANDLE by André Gil Mata
"The filmmaker also sharpens the senses by steering clear of a plot that would subsume everything, and restores the texture of moments where a feeling of solitude predominates through a relationship with objects and spaces, slowly explored through hypnotic tracking shots."
By Olivia COOPER-HADJIAN (June 2024)
